ICYMI, we ran a design collab competition on our socials in August called Our Streets where we were on the hunt for kick-ass creatives who could graffiti, photograph or illustrate. ?
The brief was to send us their take on an iconic skyline in their hood; CPT, Jozi or Durbs ? The whole purpose of the collab was to uplift up & coming creatives & to give them a platform to showcase their work #dowhatsright.
We chose 3 winners (one p/city) & each of them will be showing off their work in the windows of our selected stores. But that wasn’t it fam, they each won R15K in creative supplies ?
So now that you know the background, let’s intro you to our CPT winner…
Meet Lauren Thomson AKA @lauren_opia – a 20 year old graffiti artist who has a newfound passion for animation & considers herself to be a self-proclaimed dog whisperer.
1. What’s your creative story?
I can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t creating. Throughout school, art class was the only class I was passionate about. ?
I grew up in Joburg where graffiti is rife & by having this exposure to graffiti, it influenced me to try it out for myself. It’s through graffiti that I developed my own style. For a long time, I was producing work that I thought other people would enjoy. It was only when I decided to create art that I want to see that my style developed. Ironically, people started to enjoy my work more & I was able to make a name for myself ✊
2.What’s your everyday hustle like?
Sleeping through my ⏰⏰⏰ ‘til noon, spending the rest of the day at uni where I’m studying animation & illustration & then coming home to work on my art.
3.Besides the iconic skyline brief, what was the inspo behind your piece?
It was my recent relocation from Joburg to Cape Town ✈. The piece itself speaks to my nocturnal lifestyle & how I get to see places when they are still, empty and how colours are affected at night. ???
4.Most creative or fun gig you’ve worked on?
Briefs that allow personal creative freedom, such as this brief, are always fun. ?
The most exhilarating graffiti project I’ve worked on was Joburg’s Back to the City festival. The festival is a subcultural hub. There’s basketball courts set up, rappers, skateboarders, bboying & local and international graffiti artists. ??
5.If we snatched yo’ backpack, what would we find in it?
Well, I’m from Joburg & us Joburgers are too street smart to let that happen haha. ??? But you’d, firstly, find my mac which is my child as well as a film/disposable camera, millions of pens, markers & paintbrushes.
6.Key items for summer that you’ll be spotted wearing?
All black err’thang ?
Lauren decided to spend her cash money at Makro, Deckle Edge & Camera Land. Check her out on the gram ?: @lauren_opia
