I (Nompilo Pretty Malinga *sings “allow me to reintroduce myself”*) am 23 years old, originally from Newcastle but been in Durban for close to 10 years now.
I’m a Clothing Technologist by profession & currently working as a Designer in rag trade. In 2016, I started my blog Nompilo Malinga: Close to Home to use fashion to connect with the rest of the world.
Clearly my life literally revolves around clothes LOL. ????
(me, at my favourite place, the beach ⛱?)
Now that you know the 411 on me, let’s get to it. The FIX approached me to write this blog post on the hotspots of Durbs.
Me, still feeling like a visitor in this city, was like yeah – sounds cool! I know a thing or two about this place ?
So scroll on down to visit my fave spots…
1. IHeart market
Y’all know Durbs, it’s hooot! ☀ Warm days mean early mornings for the IHeart market, there is no better market outchea trust me!
It happens every 1st Saturday of the month, boasting a variety of foods from Indian cuisines to Mexican experiences etc. ??
This is where I had my first corndog after dreaming of one (you know, from all the American movies we watch).
I get to shop, eat & catch up with friends over a drink all before 2pm! Take a refreshing walk along the promenade afterwards, for some great instaworthy beach pics. ?
2.Moses Mabhida stadium
Holiday season also means lots of festivities everywhere in the city including the Moses Mabhida stadium ?. This coming Saturday 1 Dec, it’s the #FILLUPMOSESMABHIDASTADIUM, an event by Cassper Nyovest where he’s been doing the never been done before – selling out (filling up) the biggest stadiums across the country!
Now a lot of events go down here but did you know that Moses Mabhida Stadium has the world’s tallest wing?
It’s on my bucket list of things to do soon! Or if you’re faint-hearted, settle for the sky-car, you get thee best views of Durban from up there, magical!
3.Station Drive Precinct
A stop by Station Drive Precinct is always fulfilling with all the art around (the murals serve as the best backdrops for your pictures *wink*), coffee shops galore & antique treasures all over the place. The night life is the vaaab I live for; not too rowdy but you’re still promised a get-down ?
4.House of Curries
For another authentic Durban experience, have a bunny chow ?! House of Curries delivers on its curries like its name says, even better as they are on Florida Road where the entire street is made up of different activities, play restaurant hopping while you’re at it! ?
5.Ushaka Marine World
We can’t talk about Durban without mentioning Ushaka! Tighten your bikini as you’ll want to go on Africa’s tallest slide! ? ☀?
Plus it’s the perfect place to grab some authentic Durban prezzies ?
6.Helen Joseph Road
Looking for all the young Durban peeps? You’ll find them on Helen Joseph Road where all the hip & happening spots are! ???
I may be exaggerating the feeling but I feel like as much as I haven’t been to Bali, Durban is a hint of what it might feel like being there! ?
‘til then, @nompilo_malinga xx
